"Chaos"
For this picture i wanted to portray "chaos" as more of a story about what you're not seeing. By having the viewer question the activity not shown in the frame. I wanted the colors to make the scene seem like something "crazy" was going on beyond this sound board. And even better that maybe this device, the sound board could be the source of it all? aka a small irony within the storyline of the picture. I loved the depth of field and the insinuation the colorful room gives off in the blurred background. When it came to the hook ups and cords, i brought out the highlights and some colors but i did not want them to overbear the colors on the background since they were the objects in focus. The color and transitions were intended to blend all the vibrant colors while the picture leads you back and forth through the diagonal of the frame following each cord and knob as they travel to the "dance floor" or "alien abduction."

"Fear"
I know I'm bad with having my pictures be dark but for fear i instantly thought dark or clowns, but i couldn't do clowns for my own weeny mind. What i enhanced in this picture is mostly the highlight in the childhood toy (the over sized teddy bear). I wanted the toy to represent fear, like a kid who squeezes their favorite stuffed bear on a stormy night for comfort and safety. I loved the look Kenya (the model) made, and she actually was scared in this moment which to me made the picture more real. I loved the lighting because there also was a storm outside. In my edited version i did chose to cropped the curtain, or silhouetted black figure on the right out, i didn't want that blunt shape taking away for the characters. The shadow made by the light behind this curtain though was exactly what i imagined for this picture, dramatic and drastic. I wanted the picture to be gloomy and pathetic. For the pup, I wanted to keep those heavy shadows but also bring out her natural brown colors in her fur. I did this to show she was indeed using the toy for security, but i also enjoyed the contrast of grey to the brown.

"Beauty"
For this picture i did a play on beauty versus natural or in some people's opinion, "ugly." I set this up with more light hitting the porcelain made-up side of Blair's (the model) face. I thought the color of the quilt in the background went well with the shade of her face but i also believe it give direction or movement to carry the eye throughout the frame. I wanted the first thing the viewer see is the make up side, then follows the patterned flowers up around to the natural side. I did not want the contrast between the 2 halves of the faces (make up vs. natural) to be completely obvious at first glance, but something the viewer second guesses. In this story i almost wanted her "fake" side to resemble a doll, like one left on great grandma's quilt patterned couch. While having the natural side looks like she isn't sure whether she wants to be "perfect" like the doll, or herself, the natural "real" look. I wanted her expression confused, like happy but shy, but regretful all at the same time. Small details like her natural freckles and messy hair were also things i wanted to keep semi-subliminal.

"Passion"
For my passion shot, i imagined a musician alone, deeply concentrated and in the zone with just himself and his music. I tinkered with the idea that this picture could represent "identity" or "solitude" after it was taken but what i decided was both of those adjectives could be included into "passion" in my kind of story. I decided to make this picture black and white to keep the focus mainly on the musician and the instrument he's putting his heart and soul into. I enhanced the highlights on his arms to show the detail in his hair to give the feel of him having the chills to his own music. I also enhanced the detail and highlights on the actual instrument to balance the light in the room and of course to be the other main attraction. I used depth of field in this photo to subliminally show that this person is actually by himself (which means i got rid of the audience slightly seen at the bottom left corner). I wanted this picture to have a symmetrical look and i thought the lights in the room balanced the highlights on the bottom half of the shot. I did again choose to keep this photo dark but i also wanted this scene to be alive at night, when one's in their sanctuary and truly them self.

"Tranquility"
For tranquility, i also thought "solitude" or "identity" at first but then i thought about the moments i feel most traquil, and i instantly thought when i read right before bed, alone in my corner with a nice glass of wine or warm tea. Which also lead my train of thought to "Nightquil" which i thought was a funny little connection. Anyways ultimately again i chose another night time scene. With this picture i wanted to play with shapes. I loved the glass chalice next to the base of the lamp. i loved the pattern and how the circles then lead you to the books which are stacked not orderly but still with direction. I decided to highlight the beginning of the stack, and also where the light directly hits the objects because I loved the shades of color given off by the books. This color brought out also contrasted well with rest of the very dull colors given by the woods and tapestry. I did not want the model to be the biggest part of this picture, but more of an object to add movement and direction (and most importantly to the story line). If you start at the model's arm as apposed to her leg, your eyes are still lead to the cup and back up the lamp stand to the books which was my intended main model, the books. To make the books and trail of items pop more, i darkened the outskirts of the frame and even chose carefully where to place highlights on my human model. I desatuarated the skin of the model as well lamp to tone down the natural attraction to that area and vise versa the books to bring them out more.
